Flexible 10/100/1000 Copper-to-Fiber Conversion
The M7260A provides a flexible way to connect copper Ethernet equipment to fiber optic networks. Its RJ45 copper port supports 10/100/1000Mbps Ethernet, while the fiber interface accepts interchangeable 100/1000Mbps SFP modules.
This allows the same converter platform to be used for Fast Ethernet or Gigabit Ethernet applications without locking the installation into one fixed fiber optic configuration. The copper interface supports Cat5e or higher UTP cable up to 100 meters.
SFP Flexibility for Different Fiber Networks
One of the primary advantages of the M7260A is its interchangeable SFP architecture.
The fiber interface is compatible with 100Mbps and 1000Mbps SFP modules, allowing the installer to select the appropriate optical transceiver based on the required fiber type, wavelength, connector, and transmission distance. SFP modules are sold separately.
Available SFP options documented for the M7260A include:
- 100Mbps multimode
- 100Mbps single-mode
- 1000Mbps multimode
- 1000Mbps single-mode
- Bidirectional single-mode SFPs
- CWDM and DWDM options
The SFP table in the VERSITRON datasheet lists Gigabit single-mode options from 10 km through 100 km, depending on the selected module.
Fiber Transmission up to 100 km
The M7260A itself does not have a single fixed fiber distance. The transmission distance is determined by the SFP module installed in the converter.
For example, the available Gigabit SFPs include:
| SFP Model | Speed | Fiber | Distance |
|---|---|---|---|
| GBMM | 1000Mbps | Multimode | 220m / 550m |
| GB2MM | 1000Mbps | Multimode | 2 km |
| GB10SM | 1000Mbps | Single-mode | 10 km |
| GB20SM | 1000Mbps | Single-mode | 20 km |
| GB40SM | 1000Mbps | Single-mode | 40 km |
| GB70SM | 1000Mbps | Single-mode | 70 km |
| GB100SM | 1000Mbps | Single-mode | 100 km |
The datasheet also lists bidirectional SFP options for 10, 20, 40, 60, and 80 km applications.
This modular approach allows the M7260A to be configured around the actual fiber infrastructure rather than requiring a different fixed media converter for every transmission distance.
Gigabit Ethernet Performance
The M7260A provides full wire-speed conversion between the copper and fiber interfaces. It supports IEEE 802.3, 802.3ab, 802.3u, 802.3x, and 802.3z standards.
The converter also supports jumbo packets up to 9K bytes, providing additional flexibility for networks handling larger Ethernet frames and higher-volume data traffic.
Auto-Negotiation and Auto MDI/MDI-X
The shielded RJ45 copper port supports 10/100/1000Mbps Ethernet and uses auto-negotiation to configure duplex and flow control.
Auto MDI/MDI-X simplifies installation by automatically accommodating the connected copper Ethernet wiring without requiring manual selection of crossover or straight-through cabling. The copper interface supports Cat5e or higher UTP cable up to 100 meters.
Link Fault Pass-Through for Network Troubleshooting
The M7260A incorporates Link Fault Pass-Through (LFP) to help identify connectivity problems across the copper and fiber portions of the network.
LED indicators provide visibility into:
- Power status
- Link/activity
- Speed
- Duplex
These indicators give installers and network technicians a convenient way to verify operating status and troubleshoot connectivity.
Bidirectional and CWDM Fiber Options
For applications where fiber capacity or fiber availability is limited, the M7260A supports additional optical configurations.
The datasheet specifically identifies Bi-Directional communication options and CWDM communication options. CWDM and DWDM modules are also available for applications requiring wavelength-based fiber network expansion.
This makes the M7260A more adaptable than a fixed-optics media converter when network requirements change or when different fiber architectures must be accommodated.
Standalone or Chassis-Based Installation
The M7260A can be deployed as a standalone media converter or installed in VERSITRON’s optional MCC-14R 14-slot chassis.
Optional DIN rail mounting provides another installation method for applications where the converter needs to be installed in a network cabinet or other equipment location.
The MCC-14R provides a centralized installation platform with redundant power for multiple compatible media converters.
Compact Design for Network Integration
The M7260A measures 3.70 × 2.79 × 1.02 inches, providing a compact footprint for standalone installations. It operates from +5–12VDC and is specified for an operating temperature range of 0°C to 55°C.
The converter is designed for commercial and network infrastructure applications where compact copper-to-fiber conversion and SFP flexibility are important.
Typical Applications
The M7260A is suited for networks that need flexible copper-to-fiber conversion across different Ethernet speeds and fiber configurations.
Typical applications include:
- Gigabit Ethernet network extension
- Fast Ethernet network extension
- Building-to-building connectivity
- Fiber backbone connections
- Enterprise networks
- Data center connectivity
- Telecommunications infrastructure

10/100/1000BaseT-X Gigabit Media Converter | 1-RJ45 Ethernet Port, 1-SFP Fiber Port(M7260A) Review:
I was dreading getting a media converter to replace a failing switch because I was certain there were going to be problems with installation, or performance wouldn’t meet expectations. At this point I’ve had so many bad experiences with networking equipment I just assume something is going to go wrong. Color me surprised! Getting this converter connected and working was simple. It works the way it’s supposed to, and is consistently delivering exactly the speeds I expect. Very happy! I’ll be coming back for more networking solutions. Hopefully they all work as well as this one!
