What is an Analog/HD Video Distribution Amplifier?

An analog/HD video distribution amplifier (VDA) is an active device that receives video signals and distributes them to multiple outputs.

Instead of connecting a single video source directly to only one destination, a VDA allows the same source to be distributed to multiple monitoring or recording locations. The built-in amplifier circuitry helps maintain the appropriate signal level as the video is distributed across multiple outputs.

VERSITRON's Universal Analog/HD Video Distribution Amplifiers support:

  • CCTV Analog video
  • HD-CVI
  • HD-TVI
  • HD-AHD

This makes the VERSITRON VDA Series useful for applications where multiple locations need access to the same video signals.

How do Analog/HD Video Distribution Amplifiers Work?

An analog/HD video distribution amplifier receives video signals through its BNC inputs and actively amplifies and distributes those signals to multiple BNC outputs.

For example, a surveillance system with multiple cameras can connect its video sources to the VDA. The amplifier then distributes each video signal to multiple monitoring, recording, or display locations.

This centralized approach simplifies video distribution and can also make it easier to connect video systems to fiber optic transmission equipment when video needs to be transported to remote locations.

A typical system can be configured as:

CCTV or HD Camera → VDA → Multiple Monitors/Recorders

For longer-distance applications:

CCTV or HD Camera → VDA → Fiber Optic Video Transmitter → Fiber → Fiber Optic Video
Receiver → Remote Monitor

Applications of Analog/HD Video Distribution Amplifiers

Analog/HD video distribution amplifiers are useful whenever a video signal needs to be viewed or recorded at multiple locations.

Typical applications include:

  • CCTV surveillance systems
  • Security monitoring centers
  • Transportation and traffic monitoring
  • Road and infrastructure surveillance
  • Industrial monitoring
  • Manufacturing facilities
  • Defense and security systems
  • Video production facilities
  • Broadcast and video distribution systems
  • Satellite and RF video operations
  • Remote monitoring systems
  • Control rooms

Connecting Video Distribution Amplifiers to Fiber Optic Networks

One important application for a video distribution amplifier is connecting multiple video destinations over longer distances.

A VERSITRON VDA can distribute video signals locally, while VERSITRON fiber optic video transmitters and receivers can be used when one or more of those signals need to travel over fiber.

Fiber optic transmission is particularly useful when video must travel beyond the practical distance of copper cabling or when the installation requires immunity from EMI/RFI interference and electrical isolation.

This makes a VDA an effective component in larger CCTV-over-fiber and video-over-fiber systems.

Choosing the Right Analog/HD Video Distribution Amplifier

The primary difference between the VERSITRON Universal Analog/HD VDA models is the number of available video outputs.

  • Choose the VDAU1632 when you need 16 video inputs and 32 outputs.
  • Choose the VDAU1648 when you need 16 video inputs and 48 outputs.
  • Choose the VDAU1664 when you need 16 video inputs and 64 outputs.

All three models are designed around the same basic application: distributing multiple analog or HD video signals to multiple destinations.

If your application uses SDI or HD-SDI rather than Analog, HD-CVI, HD-TVI, or AHD, VERSITRON also offers a dedicated HD-SDI Video Distribution Amplifier series.
