An Overview of Media Converters
Media converters work as transceivers, where they convert the electrical signals from copper unshielded twisted pair (UTP) network cabling into light signals in fiber optic cables. The fiber optic cables are used in applications where the network length needs extension beyond the transmission distance of copper cables. Copper to fiber converters enable long distance connection between two network devices with copper ports using fiber optic cables. Media converters are widely deployed in data centers, government, enterprise, and telecom applications.

How Do Media Converters Work?
All VERSITRON’s media converters – be it copper to fiber converters or fiber to fiber converters, work as Layer 2 switching devices or physical layer switching devices. These devices receive signals from twisted pair copper cables and convert them to light pulses. However, they remain invisible while doing so. The media converters do not interfere with the working of upper-level devices and they support a wide range of data rates and network types. The media converters are also used in Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM) applications, where they also convert different wavelengths.
Know About Different Types of Media Converters
At VERSITRON, we provide different types of industrial and commercial media converters. They can be easily differentiated into the following types based on their design, construction, and utility.
- Copper to Fiber Media Converters: All our copper to fiber media converters are designed in adherence to IEEE 802.3 standards. They support connectivity for Fast Ethernet, Ethernet, Gigabit, and 10 Base Ethernet devices. They facilitate connections between copper based Ethernet devices over long distances using fiber optic cables.
- Fiber to Fiber Media Converters: Our fiber to fiber media converters enable connectivity between single mode and multimode fiber as well as single and dual fiber. The fiber to fiber media converters facilitate the conversion of different wavelengths. We currently provide Multimode to Singlemode Converters utilizing 100Base Fiber or 1000Base Gigabit Fiber media converter
-
Unmanaged Media Converters: All of VERSITRON’s Media Converters are unmanaged devices. These products are plug-and-play type devices and they help establish communication between devices. They do not provide any advanced level monitoring like managed media converters. There is no configuration-driven or fault detection function either. These media converters are easy to install, and require almost minimal or no configuration at all.
Our gigabit Ethernet to Fiber model M7260A is one of our most popular types of unmanaged media converters available. This converter possesses the following features among others:
- Auto negotiation with link partners
- Auto MDI/MDI-X
These media converters can be installed either in Standalone or rack-mount chassis format.
Know About Standalone Vs. Chassis-Based/Rack Mounted Media Converters
VERSITRON provides several types of media converters that can be used as standalone or chassis-based or rack mounted media converters. Our Double and Triple Duty media converters can be mounted in either format.- Standalone Media Converters: They can be mounted as standalone units and are deployed to convert electrical signals to optic signals in a regular application.
- Rack Mounted or Chassis-Based Media Converters: They comprise plug-in modules that can be easily installed in various configurations. Chassis-based or rack mounted media converters feature multiple media converters that are housed in a rack. Rack mounted media converters are widely used in commercial facilities such as computer rooms or data centers, where multiple media converters may be needed.

- The media converters listed here are suited for operating environments of -5°C ~ 60°C. They can be stored at -20°C ~ 70°C and can withstand 5% ~ 90% non-condensing humidity.
- All copper to fiber converters comply with 802.3 IEEE Ethernet Standards and they support full wire speed conversions.
- All our copper to fiber converters are covered under a lifetime warranty.
- We provide 24/7 technical support for all our products.
Benefits of Using Copper to Fiber Converters
Why copper to fiber converters are chosen over other types of media converters? The following pointers will highlight the various benefits of using fiber:
- They help industrial users extend the network connections beyond 100-meter segment length.
- Ethernet copper to fiber media converters require no additional routers or switches, which businesses and home users find appreciable. They can leverage the value of their existing legacy copper systems and fiber optic cables.
- The copper to fiber media converters allow businesses to improve the flexibility of their networking as well as add systems like security cameras to the network.
- Our copper to fiber converters are compatible with various branded switches and routers, which makes them a popular choice among our clients.
Applications of Copper to Fiber Converters
Our copper to fiber converters are widely used in the following applications:
- Terminal Units
- Protection Relays
- Single Mode and Multimode Connections
- Copper-based CCTV networks
- Substation Automation Controllers
- Ethernet-to-fiber Media Converters
- Merging Units
