Multimode to Single-Mode Fiber Conversion

The M720DA is designed to connect multimode and single-mode fiber networks without requiring replacement of existing fiber-based network equipment. The converter uses two SFP interfaces, with one SFP connected to the multimode fiber network and the other connected to the single-mode fiber network.

The M720DA supports 100Base and 1000Base SFP modules, providing flexibility for both Fast Ethernet and Gigabit Ethernet applications.

This makes the converter particularly useful when two network segments use different fiber types but need to communicate across a longer single-mode fiber link.

Flexible SFP-Based Fiber Connectivity

The M720DA does not lock the installation into one fixed fiber type or transmission distance. Its two SFP slots allow users to select the appropriate transceivers based on the requirements of the application.

Available VERSITRON SFP modules include options for:

  • 100Mbps multimode fiber
  • 100Mbps single-mode fiber
  • 1000Mbps multimode fiber
  • 1000Mbps single-mode fiber
  • Bi-directional single-fiber communication
  • Extended-distance single-mode links
  • CWDM and DWDM applications

The datasheet lists Gigabit SFP options supporting single-mode distances from 10 km to 100 km, depending on the selected module.

Available SFP Module Examples

SFP Module Speed Fiber Distance
FEMM 100Mbps Multimode 2km
FE2MM 100Mbps Multimode 2km
FE10SM 100Mbps Single-Mode 10km
GBMM 1000Mbps Multimode Up to 550m
GB2MM 1000Mbps Multimode 2km
GB10SM 1000Mbps Multimode/Single-Mode Up to 10km
GB20SM 1000Mbps Single-Mode 20km
GB40SM 1000Mbps Single-Mode 40km
GB70SM 1000Mbps Single-Mode 70km
GB100SM 1000Mbps Single-Mode 100km

Distances depend on the specific fiber type and SFP module selected. The complete SFP compatibility table is provided in the M720DA datasheet.

Extend Existing Fiber Networks

The M720DA provides a practical solution when an existing multimode fiber network needs to be connected to a single-mode fiber infrastructure.

For example, two buildings may each use multimode fiber for local network connections while a single-mode fiber cable is available between the buildings. A pair of M720DA converters can provide the multimode-to-single-mode conversion required to establish the connection.

This approach allows organizations to extend existing fiber infrastructure without replacing network equipment simply because the fiber types differ.

Full Wire-Speed Fiber Performance

The M720DA is designed for full wire-speed data transmission at the supported network speeds. Its fiber interfaces support 100/1000Base SFP modules, allowing the converter to be used in both Fast Ethernet and Gigabit Ethernet networks.

The converter complies with IEEE 802.3u and IEEE 802.3z standards for Fast Ethernet and Gigabit Ethernet applications.

Flexible Deployment and Installation

The compact M720DA can be installed in several configurations depending on the network environment.

Installation options include:

  • Desktop installation
  • Wall mounting
  • MCC-14R media converter chassis

The converter measures approximately 3.70 × 2.79 × 1.02 inches and consumes a maximum of 2.5W, making it suitable for installations where space and power consumption are important considerations.

Bi-Directional and CWDM Options

For applications requiring additional fiber efficiency, the M720DA supports optional bi-directional communication and CWDM configurations. CWDM and DWDM modules are also available from VERSITRON for applications requiring wavelength-based fiber network expansion.

These options allow the M720DA platform to be adapted to specialized fiber infrastructure requirements rather than being limited to a basic point-to-point conversion.

Network Monitoring

LED indicators provide local visibility into power status and optical link status, allowing technicians to quickly verify the operating condition of the converter and fiber connections.

Ideal for Multimode-to-Single-Mode Network Applications

The M720DA is well suited for applications where different fiber types need to be interconnected, including:

  • Campus networks
  • Building-to-building fiber connections
  • Government facilities
  • Transportation and traffic monitoring systems
  • Stadiums and large venues
  • Industrial facilities
  • Remote network extensions
  • Surveillance networks
  • Enterprise fiber infrastructure
  • Telecommunications applications

Why Choose the M720DA?

The M720DA provides a straightforward solution for extending fiber networks when multimode and single-mode infrastructure need to work together. Instead of replacing existing network equipment or rebuilding an entire fiber connection, the M720DA provides fiber-to-fiber conversion using readily interchangeable SFP modules.

Its support for 100Mbps and 1000Mbps, multimode and single-mode fiber, multiple transmission distances, optional bi-directional communication, and CWDM capability gives network designers considerable flexibility when planning fiber infrastructure.

The compact design, low 2.5W power consumption, full wire-speed performance, and desktop, wall-mount, and chassis installation options make the M720DA suitable for both new installations and upgrades to existing fiber networks.
