Extend 10/100 Ethernet Networks Over Multimode Fiber
The M7274SB provides a simple way to add fiber optic connectivity to an existing 10/100Mbps Ethernet network. The converter accepts a 10/100Base-TX connection through its RJ45 copper port and converts the Ethernet signal to 100Base-FX multimode fiber.
The copper interface supports Cat5 UTP cable distances up to 100 meters, while the fiber interface extends network connectivity up to 2 kilometers over multimode fiber. This makes the M7274SB useful for connecting network segments that exceed the practical distance limitations of copper Ethernet.
SC Multimode Fiber Connectivity
The M7274SB uses an SC fiber connector and 1310nm optical wavelength for 100Base-FX transmission over multimode fiber.
The converter supports both 50/125µm and 62.5/125µm multimode fiber, providing compatibility with commonly deployed multimode fiber infrastructure.
The VERSITRON datasheet specifies a 2 km maximum transmission distance for the M7274SB, with transmit power of -14 to -9dBm and receiver sensitivity of -34dBm.
Automatic Ethernet Configuration
The shielded RJ45 copper port supports 10Mbps and 100Mbps Ethernet with both full- and half-duplex operation.
Auto-negotiation automatically determines the appropriate speed and duplex configuration for the connected Ethernet device. Auto-MDI/MDI-X detection simplifies installation by automatically accommodating the connected cable configuration.
For installations requiring manual configuration, the M7274SB also provides forced speed and duplex settings.
Link Fault Pass-Through and Far End Fault Detection
The M7274SB incorporates Link Fault Pass-Through and Far End Fault detection to help identify problems across the copper and fiber portions of the network connection.
LED indicators provide immediate status information for the converter and connected interfaces, including:
- Power status
- Copper link/activity
- Copper speed
- Copper duplex status
- Fiber link/activity
- Fiber signal detection
This provides technicians with a convenient way to check link status during installation and troubleshooting.
Reliable Copper-to-Fiber Conversion
The M7274SB uses store-and-forward technology and incorporates a 1M RAM data buffer and watchdog timer to support reliable operation.
The watchdog timer is designed to reset the converter in the event of a system failure, helping maintain continuous operation without requiring manual intervention.
Store-and-forward operation supports packet sizes up to 1600 bytes, while smart-forward operation at 100-to-100Mbps has no packet-size limitation according to the datasheet.
DIP Switch Configuration
The M7274SB includes DIP switches that allow selected operating parameters to be configured manually.
Available settings include:
- Copper operating mode
- Duplex
- Speed
- Link Fault Pass-Through
- Auto Status Report
This provides additional flexibility when integrating the converter into existing network infrastructure.
Standalone or Chassis Installation
The compact M7274SB can be deployed as a standalone media converter or installed in VERSITRON’s optional MCC-14R 14-slot chassis.
The converter also supports optional DIN rail mounting, providing flexibility for equipment rooms, network cabinets, and other space-constrained installations.
The MCC-14R provides a centralized installation option for multiple media converters and incorporates redundant power. The chassis is shown on page 2 of the M727xSB datasheet.
Compact, Low-Power Design
The M7274SB operates from +5 to 12VDC, 1A and consumes less than 5W.
Its compact enclosure measures 3.70 × 2.79 × 1.02 inches, allowing it to be installed where available equipment space is limited.
The specified operating temperature range is -10°C to +55°C, with a storage temperature range of -40°C to +70°C and 5% to 90% non-condensing humidity.
Typical Applications
The M7274SB is well suited for Ethernet networks that require 10/100Mbps copper connectivity to be extended over multimode fiber with SC termination.
Typical applications include:
- Extended Ethernet networks
- Building-to-building connectivity
- Campus networks
- IP surveillance and security networks
- Access control and intercom systems
- Commercial Ethernet networks
- Telecommunications infrastructure
- Fiber-to-the-desk applications
