What Is an Industrial Ethernet Switch?

An industrial Ethernet switch is a network switch designed specifically for environments where networking equipment may be exposed to conditions beyond those found in typical commercial installations.

Industrial switches connect Ethernet devices, fiber optic networks, and other network infrastructure while providing reliable data transmission in environments affected by temperature extremes, vibration, electrical noise, moisture, and other industrial conditions.

VERSITRON industrial Ethernet switches are available with combinations of RJ45 Ethernet ports and fiber optic interfaces, allowing them to connect copper-based equipment to multimode or singlemode fiber networks. Depending on the model, switches can be deployed as managed or unmanaged devices and can include PoE/PoE+ capabilities.

This makes industrial fiber switches particularly useful when a network requires both rugged hardware and the extended transmission capabilities of fiber optics.

Why Use Industrial Network Switches?

Industrial environments place different demands on network infrastructure than conventional office environments. Manufacturing equipment, surveillance systems, control systems, sensors, and remote equipment may need to communicate reliably despite electrical noise, temperature fluctuations, vibration, and long transmission distances.

Industrial Ethernet switches provide several important advantages:

Ruggedized Network Connectivity

Industrial switches are designed for demanding environments and can withstand temperature extremes, vibration, shock, and other environmental stresses that can affect conventional networking equipment.

Ethernet-to-Fiber Connectivity

Industrial fiber switches provide connectivity between Ethernet devices and fiber optic networks. This allows copper-based equipment to be integrated into longer-distance fiber networks without replacing the entire network infrastructure.

Extended Transmission Distances

Fiber optic connectivity allows industrial networks to extend significantly farther than standard copper Ethernet connections. This is particularly valuable when equipment, control rooms, substations, cameras, or other network nodes are separated by substantial distances.

Immunity to EMI/RFI

Fiber optic communication is inherently immune to electromagnetic and radio-frequency interference. This makes fiber-based industrial networks particularly useful around motors, generators, machinery, power equipment, and other sources of electrical noise.

Managed or Unmanaged Operation

VERSITRON offers both managed and unmanaged industrial Ethernet switches. Unmanaged switches provide straightforward plug-and-play connectivity, while managed switches provide additional control over network traffic, VLANs, redundancy, monitoring, and other network functions.

PoE and PoE+ Connectivity

Industrial PoE switches can transmit both power and data over Ethernet cabling, simplifying the deployment of devices such as IP cameras, wireless access points, sensors, and other powered network devices.

Features of VERSITRON Industrial Fiber Switches

VERSITRON industrial switches are available in a variety of port configurations and network architectures. Depending on the model, features include:

  • RJ45 Ethernet and fiber optic ports
  • 10/100 Mbps and Gigabit Ethernet
  • SFP fiber ports
  • Multimode and singlemode fiber compatibility
  • Managed and unmanaged configurations
  • PoE and PoE+ options
  • Operating temperatures as low as -40°C
  • Operating temperatures up to +75°C on applicable models
  • Industrial-grade construction
  • Dual DC power input options on applicable models
  • DIN rail, panel, or standalone mounting options
  • LED indicators for power, link, activity, and status
  • Alarm functions for power or port failures on applicable models
  • IEEE 802.3 Ethernet standards
  • Port mirroring and link aggregation on applicable managed models
  • Store-and-forward switching
  • Auto-sensing and auto-negotiation
  • Fiber optic connectivity for long-distance network links

For networks requiring additional control, VERSITRON managed industrial switches can provide features such as VLAN, QoS, spanning tree, port mirroring, link aggregation, and other network-management capabilities depending on the model.

Managed vs. Unmanaged Industrial Switches

VERSITRON offers both managed and unmanaged industrial Ethernet switches so network designers can select the appropriate level of control for their application.

Unmanaged Industrial Ethernet Switches

Unmanaged industrial switches are designed for straightforward network connectivity without requiring configuration or ongoing network management. They are a practical choice for applications where devices simply need to communicate reliably across the network.

Managed Industrial Ethernet Switches

Managed industrial switches provide greater control over network traffic and configuration. Depending on the model, they can support features such as VLANs, QoS, redundancy, port monitoring, link aggregation, and other network-management functions.

Industrial PoE/PoE+ Switches

Industrial PoE switches combine network connectivity with power delivery, allowing compatible devices to receive both data and power through Ethernet cabling.

Industrial Ethernet Switch Applications

VERSITRON industrial network switches can be deployed across a wide range of industrial, commercial, transportation, and infrastructure applications, including:

  • Factory automation
  • Industrial Ethernet networks
  • SCADA systems
  • Electric utilities and substations
  • Oil and gas facilities
  • Transportation systems
  • Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS)
  • Industrial security and surveillance
  • IP camera and PoE networks
  • Railway communications
  • Airport communications and surveillance
  • Remote monitoring systems
  • Process control networks
  • Manufacturing facilities
  • Outdoor industrial networks

In applications where network equipment must operate reliably outside a controlled office environment, an industrial Ethernet switch can provide the combination of rugged construction, fiber connectivity, and network performance required for the application.

Industrial Fiber Switches for Copper and Fiber Networks

One of the major advantages of an industrial fiber switch is its ability to connect existing copper Ethernet equipment to a fiber optic network.

A typical industrial network may include PLCs, cameras, sensors, computers, control systems, and other Ethernet devices connected through RJ45 copper ports, while fiber optic links connect remote areas of the facility or network.

This hybrid architecture allows organizations to retain existing Ethernet equipment while using fiber where longer distance, greater bandwidth, or immunity to EMI/RFI is required.

It can also provide a practical path for expanding an existing network without replacing every network component.
