Extend RS-530 Communications Over Fiber

The F282xD Series is a circuit-card fiber optic modem designed to extend RS-530 serial communications over fiber. It provides fully transparent transmission of data, clock, and control signals, allowing RS-530 equipment to communicate across fiber optic links while maintaining the characteristics of the original serial interface.

The F282xD multiplexes control signals together with clock and data signals for transmission to the remote modem. At the remote end, the combined signal is de-multiplexed and applied to the interface.

High-Speed RS-530 Fiber Optic Transmission

The F282xD supports data rates up to 5 Mbps, making it suitable for RS-530 applications requiring substantially higher data rates than the 128 Kbps capability of the F280xD.

The modem supports synchronous, asynchronous, and isochronous transmission in either full-duplex or simplex operation. Terminal timing supports data rates up to 5 Mbps, while source timing supports rates up to 1 Mbps.

Flexible Interface and DCE/DTE Configuration

The F282xD supports multiple serial interface standards, including:

The DCE/DTE configuration is switch selectable, providing flexibility when connecting different types of serial communications equipment. The electrical interface uses a 25-pin female DB25 connector, while the fiber interface uses an LC connector.

The F282xD is available in two primary fiber configurations:

• F2825D — RS-530/RS-422/RS-449/V.35/MIL-STD-188-114A fiber optic modem, LC, singlemode, 1310 nm, up to 20 km

Four-Channel Data Multiplexer Capability

In addition to operating as a fiber optic modem, the F282xD can be used as a four-channel synchronous/asynchronous data multiplexer.

The datasheet describes the F282xD as having an eight-channel data multiplexer, with four channels in each direction. Control signals, clock, and data can be multiplexed and transmitted over the fiber link before being de-multiplexed at the remote unit.

Seven LED Indicators for System Monitoring

The F282xD provides seven indicators for monitoring modem operation and link activity:

• ALM — Alarm
• TXD — Transmit Data
• RXD — Receive Data
• TXC — Transmit Clock
• RXC — Receive Clock
• LOOP — Loopback

These indicators provide convenient visibility into power, alarm, data, clock, and loopback status.
