How to Configure PoE Switch Setup With NVR?
All modern video networks utilize IP cameras. The IP cameras are employed for surveillance purposes, to record and store the visual data. To achieve these purposes, network video recorder (NVR) systems are also used. Owing to advanced protocols and functionality, the industry experts advice using NVR to support video networks integrated with IP cameras. You can configure NVR with IP camera. NVR either works with Ethernet or wireless communication protocols. Due to several benefits of Ethernet over Wi-Fi, Power over Ethernet (PoE) technology is preferred to be used with NVR. However, to connect NVR with PoE, one must know what NVR is, what PoE switches
are, and how to interconnect both the technologies. This post discusses all these factors along with the difference between PoE NVR and PoE switches and the process of interconnection.
Before beginning the discussion over how to use the PoE switch setup with NVR, let us discuss both elements individually.
What is PoE NVR?
NVR stands for a network video recorder. When it is integrated with PoE transmission protocols, it is referred to as PoE NVR. This PoE NVR offers centralized controls for video or image management and storage. Often the NVR technology is integrated with PoE switches in order to form a managed PoE NVR network. This PoE NVR connection enables the transmission of electronic data and power over an Ethernet cable. Multiple switches are integrated for the number of powered devices, as data distribution is performed by them. The switches deliver video data to a specific IP address under the PoE NVR.
What is the Difference between PoE NVR and PoE Switches?
The difference between PoE NVR and PoE switches is that NVR is an advanced video signal processing technology, whereas PoE switches act as intermediate devices. If video transmission over Ethernet only adopts PoE switches in the Ethernet network, it only allows managed networking and data transmission. On the other hand, PoE NVR enables remote IP addresses and controlled video data transmission, processing, and storage, which improves the quality of the video transmission network.
If both the technologies, namely, PoE and NVR are integrated together, they generate a highly efficient video transmission network. Although to serve regular or advanced video transmission over Ethernet and NVR, the PoE switches are configured with NVR in two different ways. These configurations are discussed in detail in the next section.
How to Configure PoE Switch with NVR?
Generally, the PoE switches are integrated or configured with NVR
for the following purposes.
To reduce the complexity of the Ethernet video transmission network.
To get more number of ports for transmission.
To suffice these two requirements, the two types of configurations are done in the following ways
How to Connect PoE Switch with NVR with Router?
It will help to reduce the complexity of the Ethernet video transmission network. The following steps are performed for the PoE switch setup with NVR.
Interconnect the NVR and PoE routers: If the plug and play connectivity is not available then, the operator may have to follow steps in product manuals.)
Avail one or more PoE switches: Connect the PoE switch to the LAN port of the PoE router with the help of an Ethernet cable. Further, connect a power cable to the power outlet of the PoE switch.
Connect the cameras to ports: Connect the IP cameras to the number of ports on the PoE switches. Commonly in this setup, 1 to 8 switches are available.
Connect IP cameras and PoE NVR router: Ensure that IP cameras are interlinked with the PoE NVR router to enable centralized control and video recording.
Once done, turn on the power supply to the PoE router, which eventually powers NVR and PoE switches and the transmission will follow in a regular manner as NVR does.
This specific configuration of PoE switches with PoE NVR allows video transmission from multiple IP cameras by using a single Ethernet cable, which reduces the complexity of the network. This system requires no external power sources or power wires.
How to Connect PoE Switch to NVR Without Router?
It will help to get more number of ports for transmission. Some applications may demand high configuration switches with multiple ports. If one cannot find a suitable high-density PoE switch, they can add extra ports in PoE NVR and PoE switch configurations in the following way.
Connect the IP cameras to a PoE switch that has 1 to 8 ports.
Connect the PoE switch to the local area network (LAN) so that the switch works as a hub or a command switch.
Further, connect the hub or command port to the PoE router and then connect another PoE switch with 1 to 8 ports to the hub switch via an open port. With this connection, the overall count of PoE ports becomes fifteen (seven utility ports of the hub switch and eight of secondary PoE switch)
Further, connect the NVR with the PoE router and ensure all the IP cameras are interlinked to NVR. This way, all IP cameras function under the same NEVER network with additional utility PoE ports.
In order to accomplish successful PoE switch configuration with NVR, it is important to ensure the compatibility of IP cameras, NVR routers, and PoE switches/industrial PoE switches
. Also, it is important to acquire quality products to avoid future problems like switch malfunction, network breakdown, etc. therefore, you must buy products from trusted suppliers like VERSITRON. The company has been providing quality fiber optic products
and Ethernet products for several years.
