Factors to Consider When Choosing Cables for Power Over Ethernet

POE or Power Over Ethernet is a technology based on IEEE 802.3af and 802.3at standards. It enables data transfer over Ethernet cables within a distance of 100 meters. It controls various networking devices such as IT phones, network switches, and IP cameras, and facilitates interoperability among them. With this, you can cover maximum areas for power distribution with minimal infrastructure. These equipment may either source or transmit power or may be powered devices. POE allows remote installation of certain equipment, which reduces the requirement for extra electrical fixtures. However, cables and switches are still an important part of connectivity for most POE devices. This post discusses some factors which may be helpful in choosing the right POE cables for your POE devices.

Pointers to Consider When Choosing POE Cables for Your Application

You need appropriate POE cable types for your device for a high-quality and seamless network, else it can lead to reduced heat dissipation, temperature surges, and conductivity issues in the network, and this directly affects the performance. All these issues lead to increased power consumption, network errors, reduced cable lengths, and so on. You can choose from various types of cables to connect your POE devices depending upon your requirement. But there are certain factors you may want to consider to help you choose the right POE cable. Here are some pointers.
  • Network cables such as Cat 5e and Cat 6 are commonly used. These cables comprise eight wires which are four twisted pairs. Two of these are called data pairs as they are used for data transfer. The other two twisted pair cables transfer electrical signals through them. Out of the four twisted pairs, POE can use the data pairs for either of these two functions.
  • If your application demands more energy, high gauge cables such as Cat 6e are useful in reducing energy wastage and resistance. This is especially useful in applications involving high working temperatures and closed environments.
  • Considering the type of POE switch and the way the cables are installed is crucial to avoid certain issues. For instance, cables connected to POE switches in the middle of a bundle produce more heat than those on the outer sides of the bundle. This happened more in closed environments as heat radiation reduces. So, two aspects are important in this case— a proper ventilation system in the environment and loosening and segregating large cable bundles.
  • Heating issues are common when it comes to copper cables as they are good conductors of heat and electricity. Copper cables are either shielded or unshielded. These are also known as STP or shielded twisted pair and UTP or unshielded twisted pair cables. STP cables have a foil shield around them and dissipate more heat than UTP cables. High heat dissipation cools down the cable fast. So, choosing a Cat 6a STP cable may help in such situations.
  • Ethernet cables such as SPF Cat 6 and POE switches are crucial to build this network. Appropriate type of cable, their structure, and installation directly affect the quality, performance, and speed of the network.
  • Keeping the temperature range of the cable between 50 and 90 degrees Celsius is good for the network performance and long operation life of cables. Ensure this temperature range does not exceed beyond a limit.
