SFP Network Switches – Advantages

The main benefit of using SFP fiber optic switches in a network is that these devices allow for connecting network equipment of varying distances.

For example, let’s say that you have our 36 port network switch at a central hub location and you want to make a “Star Configuration” to twenty IP cameras that are in remote isolated areas.

Ten cameras are located 2km and closer to the central/monitoring location. So you would install ten of the model GB2MM SFP module into the SFP port on the switch. Next, you would connect multimode fiber optic cable from each GB2MM module to a corresponding SFP module installed in a remote device (such as a media converter) at the remote camera locations.

Note: You want to verify that the SFP module in the remote switch or media converter is the same wavelength as the GB2MM module. In this case, that would be 1310nm.

Now let’s say that the remaining ten cameras are located of varying distances of up to 10km away from the central site. You would now install ten of the model GB10SM SFP module into the switch. Next, you connect singlemode fiber optic cable from each GB10SM module to a corresponding SFP module of the same specifications installed in a remote SFP fiber switch or media converter at each camera location.

Utilizing fiber SFP switches in your network provides you with a cost effective solution if your networking requirements should change over time. Let’s say that in our above example, the remote cameras are relocated either closer to, or farther away from the central hub. Instead of replacing the SFP switches or media converters at these remote sites, you would simply swap out the SFP module for a model that suits your distance requirements.

Or if you have an existing network that is currently operating at 100Base but then is upgraded to 1000Base Gigabit or 10Gigabit speed, you would once again swap the 100Base SFP modules for 1000Base Gigabit or 10Gigabit SFP modules.
