How FOM II Serial Data to Fiber Converters Work

FOM II fiber optic modems convert electrical serial data into optical signals for transmission over fiber optic cable. At the receiving end, the optical signal is converted back to the corresponding electrical serial interface.

The F280xD and F282xD series multiplex data, clock, and control signals for transmission over the fiber link. At the remote end, these signals are de-multiplexed and applied to the electrical interface, providing transparent communication between connected serial equipment.

Fiber optic transmission also provides electrical isolation between connected equipment and eliminates many of the interference problems associated with copper serial communication. This makes FOM II modems well suited for industrial, transportation, military, and other environments where reliable serial communication is required.

Benefits of Serial Data over Fiber

Converting serial communication to fiber provides several advantages over conventional copper connections:

  • EMI/RFI Immunity: Fiber optic cable is immune to electromagnetic and radio-frequency interference.
  • Electrical Isolation: Fiber eliminates direct electrical connections between network endpoints.
  • Long-Distance Transmission: Fiber allows serial signals to travel significantly farther than conventional copper interfaces.
  • Transparent Operation: Data, clock, and control signals can be transmitted without changing the original serial communication format.
  • Flexible Fiber Options: FOM II models are available for both multimode and singlemode fiber.
  • Multiple Serial Interfaces: VERSITRON provides solutions for RS-232, RS-423, RS-530, RS-422, RS-449, V.35, and MIL-STD-188-114A applications.

FOM II Serial Fiber Optic Modem Applications

VERSITRON FOM II serial data to fiber converters are designed for a wide range of communication and control applications, including:

  • Industrial automation and control
  • Transportation and traffic monitoring
  • Manufacturing and assembly systems
  • Military and defense communications
  • Airport systems
  • Heavy electrical equipment
  • Long-distance serial communication
  • Data acquisition and control systems
  • High-EMI industrial environments
  • Applications requiring electrical isolation
  • Remote equipment monitoring and control

The ability to transmit serial data over fiber makes FOM II modems particularly useful when copper communication links are limited by distance, electrical interference, or grounding concerns.

Standalone and Rack-Mount Installation

VERSITRON FOM II modems can be deployed individually or integrated into centralized rack-mount systems. Available housing options include the HF-1 single-card enclosure, HF-2SS 2-slot 19-inch rack-mount chassis, HF-20A 20-slot 19-inch rack-mount chassis, and VMX20 20-slot VERSIMUX II chassis.

This range of installation options allows system designers to select a configuration appropriate for individual point-to-point links or larger centralized serial communication systems.
